First settled by European immigrants in 1853, the city of Elma was named for Union soldier Elmer Brown and incorporated in 1888.  The city lies within the beautiful Chehalis River Valley about 30 miles west of Olympia and 40 miles east of the Pacific Coast.

Elma has historically served as the commercial center of eastern Grays Harbor County with agriculture and the timber industry as mainstays of the local economy.  Elma is home to the Grays Harbor Raceway and the Grays Harbor County Fair and Event Center, a 68 acre facility with 15 major buildings and barns and two outdoor stages.

Year round events at the Fairgrounds include the annual County Fair and the National Sprint Car tour.  In recent years, commuters and retirees have decided to call Elma home as well, drawn in large part by the area’s natural beauty.  Elma offers easy access to Lake Sylvia State Park for boating and fishing, Schafer State Park for camping and 91,000 acre Capitol State Forest for hiking, biking and trail riding.
